Emotional Literacy leads to Emotional Maturity
The first step is Emotional Literacy, where you are able to identify and label your emotions. The next level of competency is to learn to recognize a feeling as it is happening and to have the ability to discern whether it is based in the present, or if it is an emotional reaction which is rooted in the past.
Emotional maturity is reached when you have the ability to assess the current situation and respond appropriately, while containing any emotional reactions that may be evoked. Being able to contain emotional reaction gives you choice over your behaviour and allows you to be fully accountable for your actions. An emotionally immature person cannot discern the source of their emotions, neither can they contain them.
